SOB's 2/22/10

On Monday, February 22nd, Brooklyn and Cincinnati come together in Downtown Manhattan, as Tanya Morgan, comes to rock the stage at SOB’s. Fresh off their critical acclaimed sophomore effort, Brooklynati, which received Best of 2009 list honors from AllMusic, eMusic and PopMatters and Time Out NY, Tanya Morgan is already in the studio working on new music, including three solo albums from each of the groups members. On Monday, February 22nd, they will premier new music off Donwill’s forthcoming project, Don Cusack in High Fidelity. Listen to the single, “I See You” here.

Also joining the fray is Kooley High, P.sO (formerly P.Casso) and the young up-and-comer YC the Cynic. It will be Kooley High’s first official performance in NYC, and if you don’t already know about these North Carolina boys (and girl), you should get familiar quick. After working with 9th Wonder and taking over the hip-hop scene in their hometown of Raleigh, NC, Kooley High is set to show and prove in the Big Apple. P.sO, formerly P.Casso will be debuting songs off his forthcoming Moontones mixtape, and finally, YC the Cynic will be setting the show off with his quick wit and impressive wordplay. The 19-year-old YC the Cynic is going to make an impact in 2010, with his impressive debut mixtape, You’re Welcome, set for release February 9th. The lead single, “Say Superman” has already been turning heads and eating up blogs across the net.

Tickets for this show are $10 in advance and $12 the day off. You can purchase your tickets HERE.

On Saturday, January 9th, Don Will of Tanya Morgan steps out of the group’s shadow to debut new songs off his forthcoming solo debut effort, Don Cusack in High Fidelity. The album, slated for release on March 23rd, is a stirring set of lovesick songs, inspired by the movie of the same title. The January 9th show, at the Homebase NYC 2010 kick-off event at Santos Party House, should contrast a bit from the Tanya Morgan shows fans are used to, as Don Will’s holds down the stage on his own, sharing the floor with both male and female vocalists to add flavor to High Fidelity tunes. Also on the bill are capable wordsmith, Homeboy Sandman, Pac Div affiliate TiRon, and the Q-Tip-endorsed MC, Spree Wilson.

Felabration!

FELABRATION takes its audience through an interactive journey of the life of Africa’s most prolific musical pioneer: first, with a documentary, “Music is the Weapon,” live drummers, then with a special performance by dance virtuosos “Afro Mosaic Soul.” Leading the evening’s tribute are DJ Rich Medina, the global ambassador of Jump N Funk and DJ Ian Friday, minister of sound for Libation, ground zero for the Soul Revolution.

Fela Kuti was born October 15, 1938 in Abeokuta, Nigeria. In 1961 he formed Koola Lobitos in London, two years later, he created “Afrobeat”, which was inspired by James Brown, the Yoruba culture, high life and jazz. He founded a commune/recording studio called the Kalakuta Republic, complete with his own private nightclub, The Shrine.

His music served as a rallying cry for the disenfranchised, critiquing the military government and made Fela not only a pop star but a political figure as well. People took to the streets singing his songs and the military responded by viciously harassing Fela, jailing him and nearly killing him on several occasions. One million people attended his funeral in Nigeria.

October 15th only comes once a year. Don’t miss the opportunity to celebrate the life and work of an extraordinary man.
