After the critical praise for Brooklynati, the Cincinnati-Brooklyn rap crew readies for solo releases, kicking off with Donwill’s Don Cusack in High Fidelity, based on the Jon Cusack movie of the same title. In preparation for the album, Donwill dropped Laura’s Tape today, mixed by DJ King Most, who, in keeping with the High Fidelity movie theme, plays the role of DJ Rob Gordon. Dropping just in time for Valentine’s Day, Laura’s Tape is laden with R&B remixes; Donwill gives his spin on classics from Chic to Stevie Wonder to Omarion. The first listen gives feelings of romantic evenings and picturesque dates, but listening closely to the lyrics, this mixtape is actually the story of a journey, making the perfect listen for Valentine’s Day weekend.

“The mixtape is a continuation of the album’s concept,” says Donwill about the movie-themed concept that ties both projects together. “In High Fidelity, the movie peaks as the lead character, Rob Gordon, is making a mixtape for his long-time love interest, Laura. This mixtape references that moment, so I thought it fit perfectly with the Valentine’s Day theme.”

Today, we bring you “You’re Welcome”, the debut offering from YC the Cynic, a young, budding MC who despite being only 19-years-old, has already proven himself thoroughly committed to the art. Raised in Hunts Point, in the South Bronx, YC is bringing Hip-Hop back to its birthplace. In less than a year since he began rapping seriously, YC has performed in clubs all over New York City, equipped with an impressive vocabulary, infectious energy, polished delivery and an acute attention to detail that makes for entertaining shows and catchy songs. In his own words, YC “is determined to be widely considered one of the best emcees ever to grace a microphone”, and even though YC the Cynic knows he has a long way to go, he also knows the joy is in the journey….

Born and raised in Accra, Ghana, Blitz the Ambassador grew up to the sounds of Afro-Beat, Highlife, Jazz, and Motown. From an early age he played djembe in local drum circles and dance troupes. “Live music was always a part of my life,” says Blitz. “It’s hard to find a Ghanaian kid who wasn’t part of some band.” But when his older brother introduced him to Public Enemy’s classic album, It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, he was changed forever. “I had never heard young Black people express themselves in that way before,” recalls Blitz.

After moving to the U.S. to attend college, Blitz continued to hone his musical skills, and grew a large following in Ohio as undergrad at Kent State University. After graduation, Blitz moved to New York City and began to record, Stereotype. This live-instrument-laden, musical exploration, is Blitz’ sonic manifesto. “I set out to change the way hip-hop approaches live instrumentation, to create synergy between all of the sounds on my personal playlist.” Drawing from his diverse musical background, he dove into the project with the explicit intent of pushing the boundaries of Hip Hop music. In the process of recording the album, Blitz formed the band, The Embassy Ensemble, a musical collective of classically trained artists who grew up on Hip Hop. After three long years of recording, Blitz took the album to several. Getting the run around one to many times, Blitz decided go it alone. “One day I just said, ‘Fuck it’,” recounts Blitz. “I was tired of record labels telling me I had to be like somebody else. So I came home and wrote, Rememebering the Future,” Blitz explains. This epic, track illustrates Blitz’ refusal to be a Stereotypical rapper. The chorus of the song is, ‘I am who I am / and you can never change me / Reaching for the sun / remembering the future.’

Blitz the Ambassador, the Ghanaian-American hip-hop artist whose video “Breathe” has been in heavy rotation at MTV2, will kick off a 6-city tour of California with an acoustic set at La Peña in Berkeley on Wednesday, February 10th. Blitz’s live performance, where he leads a 6-piece band with a blaring horn section, sets him apart from the pack as a unique musical force in hip-hop. After a series of high-profile local gigs like opening for Big Daddy Kane at Celebrate Brooklyn! and sharing the stage with the Roots at the Okayplayer Holiday Jam, Blitz is set to take his band, The Embassy Ensemble, and their live show to the West Coast. Following the show at La Peña, Blitz and the Embassy Ensemble will travel to CSU Chico on February 11th, Sacramento on February 13th, San Francisco for an exclusive performance with Soul singer Martin Luther at the Elbo Room on February 15th, and then Los Angeles for a set at the UCLA Hip-Hop Congress on February 17th, before wrapping up with a set at Afrofunke in Santa Monica on February 18th. Blitz the Ambassador’s _Stereotype_ (Listen/Download) was recognized as the Best Album of the Year by DJBooth.net and the Society of Cinema and the Arts, who said that despite his independent status, his use of “rousing horns beat-wise…and the passion and urgency with which Blitz delivers his rhymes make him impossible to write off.”
