The Los Angeles-based skate crew, Illegal Civilization, brought together an exciting line-up of artists and a movie for their first Cinema Tour. For it’s New York City stop, Denzel Curry and Show Me the Body were the headliners at Highline Ballroom.
Opening up the show was Na Kel and jazzy 6 person band Standing on the Corner, who warmed up the crowd before Illegal Civ’s Mikey Alfred premiered a short film that he directed.
Show Me The Body was up next, adding in a rock element to the night. Known for their use of the banjo and sub-bass and genre-bending sounds, SMTB showed that rock is still alive and well in New York City.
Last, but not least, was Denzel Curry, who started the night off talking about the tragedy that had occurred the previous night in Las Vegas at a country music festival.
“Shit is fucked up. This is the biggest one in US history,” Curry said “I love y’all and I’m glad y’all are in a good environment and I want y’all to be safe.”
Curry’s performance was filled with energy, stage diving, mosh pits or “spirals”, and definitely had a punk vibe to it. He performed favorites like “Hate Government”, “ULT”, and unreleased track called “Switch It Up” that had the crowd going crazy.
The show was definitely an exciting night to celebrate all genres of music and forms of art. We were thankful to have been a part of this special night for Illegal Civilization and the culture.
