On Saturday October 12th, Rich Medina’s beloved Fela Kuti-tribute party, Jump N’ Funk, makes its debut in Brooklyn at FREECANDY, presented by Move Forward Music, as part of our monthly dance function, Revival.

Revival takes place every second Saturday at FREECANDY, an old car wash that’s been converted into a hidden-gem of an art gallery and event space. With resident DJs Rich Medina and PQ at the helm, and breathtaking pop art adorning all the walls, courtesy of the venue’s in-house artist, Malcolm A Davis II, Revival attracts an ecclectic crowd with a penchant for dance moves. Each month features a different special guest DJ set, adding a slightly different music flavor to the mix. The guest DJs, who have included such venerable names as Tony Touch, Cosmo Baker, Stretch Armstrong, DJ Soul, Sake 1, and more, are given the reigns to take the crowd on the musical journey of their choice, with only one guiding principal: people should be dancing.

For the month of October, on the 12th, Revival’s generally open format will give way to a strict diet of Afrobeat and Afro-funk, in dedication to one of the greatest musicians, composers and band leaders ever to come out of Africa, and possibly to ever grace this earth, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

At the turn of the millennium, Rich Medina introduced a whole generation of dancers to Afrobeat with Jump N’ Funk, widely considered to be the first and most consistent DJ-based party dedicated to Fela Kuti. A a staple on dancefloors from New York to Berlin for over a decade, Jump N’ Funk re-creates the vibe of a Fela Kuti concert, with Rich Medina utilizing culturally relevant footage and West African dance videos for visuals, provided by The Marksmen, and live percussion courtesy of some of the most revered African drummers in the business. Jump N Funk has had many homes over the years, but has recently become more of a special event, rather than the recurring regular function it once was.

One of the goals of Revival, a party dreamt up a year ago by Brooklyn native and Executive Director of Move Forward Music, Alex Damashek, was to bring back an feeling of old-school New York, the grittiness of Brooklyn; to “revive” an atmosphere of cultural diversity and art that some feel is becoming increasingly less a part of the identity of New York as the city explodes economically. With that in mind, it made perfect sense to “revive” Jump N’ Funk, a respected dance institution in NYC for many years, and to highlight the music and life of Fela Kuti, on the weekend before his birthday, in a way that the pomp and splendor of the Broadway musical never could.

The Jump N’ Funk Revival takes place Saturday October 12th, from 10pm – 4am, at FREECANDY, located at 905 Atlantic Avenue, in Forte Green, Brooklyn. Admission will be $10, but fans can RSVP for discount admission before midnight at DONYC.com.
